Common Cat Eye Snake (leptodeira annulata)

Field collected in Suriname

Species Information: Dipsadidae (subfamily of colubroid); rear-fanged; mildly venomous

Habitat: Tropical forests; arboreal; can be found near streams and ponds.

Size: It is a slender snake, and males smaller than females; approximate size males 35 inches (90cm) and females up to 40 inches (100cm).

Food: Lizards, frogs and toads, frog and toad eggs, smaller snakes, fledgling birds, and fish; can be cannibalistic, feeding on their own eggs.

Disposition: When handled does not try to strike or bite. Not known to cause injury to humans; venomous to prey items.
