CB Amazon Tree Boa

Amazon Tree Boa

(corallus hortulanus)

Where do they come from? South and Central America

What do they eat? Live or pre-killed (frozen and thawed) rodents.

What type of housing do I need? A tall glass aquarium with a screen top will work fine. You will need to attach branches or poles for this arboreal snake to feel comfortable. There are several ways to achieve this, one is simply a tall aquarium the other is to turn the aquarium on it's side. We have done this and siliconed a piece of glass across the bottom so the substrate would stay put. Hinged screens work very well if you place several locking clips around the outside. Be creativity!

What type of cage decorations should I have? Plenty of branches that a attached firmly and not easily moved around. A substrate that will hold humidity, such as mulch, coconut fiber or moss. A large water dish for soaking and drinking.

What type of lighting and heating do I need? A temperature range of 78'F - 82'F is best. Provide a basking spot where the temperature is constant at about 85'F. Night time temperatures should not get below 75'F. Humidity should be between 80% to 90%. You can achieve this by misting the inside of the enclosure once or twice a day. Condensation is a sign that your terrarium is not well ventilated.

A final note: Amazon Tree Boas are beautiful snakes. They tend to come in many different color variations. They are temperamental and often tame down. Given the optimal conditions these snakes thrive in captivity and reproduce without much thought.
